You’re obsessed with links! – No SEO Links Required!

If I said to you, I can get Google first place, first page result with just one link or no links at all for a high volume keyword(s) would you believe that to be true? – Using the Google UK Index with a two word phrase with broad term 36.9M competing pages! and on that website just have one page – that’s all!

No I haven’t lost my marbles and no, I’m not talking about a one off exception to the “Google Webmaster Guidelines”.

See, I think the whole SEO industry and the general public has become obsessed with SEO Links.  Specifically, building links on external resources that point to their website.  This is bad news and it needs to stop! (The world is round – the world is flat – we need thousands of links).

In a lot of instances you’re completely wasting your time and money!

Now, many top dogs in the industry will probably say that I’m just spouting a load of rubbish here, that I don’t know what I’m talking about and they might skip over whats being said and move on quite rapidly going about their everyday business as usual and convincing others to create lots of links if they wish to be successful with SEO.

Article links have their own success stories, so let me propose that we concentrate here on directory links.

Directory search

Have you ever gone to a directory website to search for something – lets take the prize daddy of them all – DMOZ!  Quite frankly, it is an appalling representation of the web. Poorly maintained, out of date, biased by its own lack of editorial controls  – but besides that – Ask yourself, this being the most “ranked” hand edited directory of them all – do you favour this in terms of your Google, Yahoo or Bing search? No – a resounding “NO” from millions of people.  There are directories that do work for you – local and niche directories – just forget the mainstream generic ones!

I’ve built many new websites and taken them to first page results on highly competitive kw terms without the need to produce endless links from other sites.

Google sites “Authority” and “Relevance” – and these matter tremendously

A small number of high quality links (five or ten), with the right page rank and traffic volumes using the right keyword anchors, created over 6 months from complimentary websites and your new website will be off to a flying start!

You don’t need 30 links a day or 100 or 10,000! When someone clicks through on that link – you want the cleanest traffic you can get.  The right audience, complimentary sites that have visitors looking to buy what you sell – when they click through, they stand a good chance of converting on your chosen landing page and buy your product.

I was recently working with a “Marketing Manager” who saw fit to pay tens of thousands for low value links into a site we we’re optimising through a very well know “yellow” directory only to measure that the more links we recieved from their source the worst it impacted our organics.

If you want to build links and be successful doing so…. Think before you link!

Can I do less and achieve more? The answer is yes.

And when you’ve created that small handful of high quality links, spend the hundreds of hours you saved yourself by drinking wine or beer or by making really good, high quality pages that engage your audience.
